You are here: Business webinar > Questions and Answers
Thank you for asking the following questions to our panel. We didn't have time to answer them on the day and so here are the responses:
Response from Chris Hines:
Get everyone to do their Carbon Footprint and tell them their carbon footprint of travel and offset it for them.
As the bosses of Lonely Planet and Rough Guide said: "Travel Less and stay longer.”
Response from Robin Barker:
This topic was briefly discussed in the webinar and Robin spoke about encouraging people to park their cars and then explore Looe and the surrounding area using sustainable transport. He also discussed the principle of short stay and long stay parking and pitched the idea that long stay parking could be rewarded as a way to encourage visitors to not use use their cars once they have arrived.
Response from Visit Looe:
Looe is well placed for sustainable travel options and there are some exciting discussions taking place regarding developing the cycling network and e-bike availability.
We support the idea of businesses helping guests calculate the carbon footprint of their journey and then providing opportunities to offset it.
Response from Robin Barker:
There has been huge innovation in the sector in providing really good sustainable and super clean options that don’t require an increase in single use plastic.
Three examples from amongst the Awards sponsors:
West Country Tea: based in Crantock, 100% compostable tea, bags and packaging – we believe this is the only tea producer to guarantee this (many others have compostable bags but not packaging, or have bags that contain plastic micro-particles)
Ada Cosmetics: refillable soap dispensers that last
Eco Laundry: laundry with sustainable approach to water, energy, chemicals, etc.
Response from Visit Looe:
Karen Wells-West spoke about her use of natural cleaning products in her business throughout the pandemic and shared some ideas of how to reduce the use of single use items in her presentation.
We encourage businesses to reduce their use of avoidable single use plastics, to reduce their waste and to share the ways they are achieving this with their customers.
Businesses will need a risk assessment to ensure their use of reusables/refillables keep their staff and their customers safe and we encourage businesses to actively promote their positive activities with customers. This will help customers build their confidence in multiple use items again and remind them of the importance of sustainable choices.
Response from Chris Hines:
In 1987, the United Nations Brundtland Commission defined sustainability as “meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.”
Response from Visit Looe:
We share the definition Chris has provided and this is the definition we use too.
Our actions such as the things we buy (single use, refillable, recyclable, etc.) and how we dispose of them (pass on to someone else, re-use the parts, recycle, throw in the rubbish) have an effect both locally and across the world as the items we use can be grown or manufactured many miles away. By thinking sustainability, we can make a difference.
A recording of our webinar, including all of the presentations given by our fantastic panel of speakers is available to watch again.
